The Program of development of Koltsovo airport as a hub started in 2003 with the support of the Ministry of Transport of the Russian Federation, the Government of Sverdlovsk area and Renova Group of companies. During the years of a huge reconstruction (2003-2009) the total amount of investments reached 12 billion rubles, among them: private investments – 8 billion rubles (in development of the aerostation complex and technical re-equipment of the services), state investments – 4 billion rubles (in reconstruction of air field coverings, building of flight control towers).
Dmitry Medvedev the president of the Russian Federation has highly appreciated the project of Koltsovo airport reconstruction realized for a short time and has underlined that state-private partnership is “a really correct way” of the Russian transport sector development.
Today the first class airport Koltsovo has 2 runways, 60 aircraft parking places for and it can take in the majority of modern types of aircrafts including Airbus A320, Boeng 737, Il-96, Tu-204. In 2006 the new international terminal was opened. It is considered to be one of the advanced in Russia. In October of 2007 the new terminal of internal airlines was put into operation. The new internal terminal building was constructed on a place of the old terminal in 2009, and former one was united with the international terminal. After commissioning of the new terminal the capacity of the airport has reached 8,400,000 passengers per year. It is the 5th airport in Russia rated by the capacity. It is a member of Airport Council International (ACI), a part of Airport Association of Russia and CIS (Airport of civil aviation). There is a modern hotel and a terminal of business aviation among the airport facilities. A large logistical center and a cargo terminal are under construction at the moment. Besides the civil aviation the military aviation of Russian Ministry of Defense is based at Koltsovo.
