The friary was laid down in 1398 near Zvenigorod, 50 km from Moscow, on a high coast of the Moscow river, on a Storozh mountain which served as works of the Moscow princedom. It was founded by Saint Savva, the Zvenigorod wonders-worker, one of the first pupils of the reverend Sergiy Radonezhsky, according to the will of the Zvenigorod knyaz Jury Dmitrievich, the second son of the Great Moscow prince Dimitriy Donskoy. In 1405 the white-stone Christmas cathedral was built. The canonized reverend Savva was buried near its entrance. In 1650 tsar Alexey Mihajlovich published the decree about the construction of a new monasterial ensemble on the Storozh mountain. It was the beginning of the second building period in monasterial history. In the spring-autumn of 1649 all necessary construction works in the Christmas cathedral were made and all paintings upon a gold background were made anew. The basic buildings and fortifications (length of 760 m, height of 8-9 m, wall thickness — nearby 3 m) were built in 1650-1656. Fortress walls originally had 7 towers from which up to our days only 6 has remained.
Different state institutions were housed in the friary in the Soviet period: military units, sanatorium, a museum. The friary was revived in 1995. The Most Holy Patriarch Alexiy II solemnly transported the hallows of the Saint Savva during the celebration of the 600 anniversary of the friary in 1998. Now there are 60 monks and novices in the Savvino-Storozhevsky friary now. Monks are involved in monasterial temples renewal. Restoration works of the palace of tsar Alexey Mihajlovich, of a belfry, fortification walls and towers has being carried out. There is a children's shelter in the friary. Two years theological courses for adults are organized. The library with a reading room with funds of 6,5 thousand volumes is opened.
The object represents a big historical, cultural and religious value. Due to the unique characters of the friary restoration works were carried out in the conditions of an operating object. Reconstruction of heating and water supply systems were carried out by means of Wirsbo solutions using Wirsbo-evalPEX and Wirsbo-PEX polymeric pipes. The renovation works has been done in the refectory and the brothers case.
