Moscow Cathedral Mosque

The Moscow Cathedral Mosque is the main spiritual centre of historic and cultural heritage of Muslims in Russia. It was built in 1904 according to the architect N. Zhukov’s design, and at the expense of the Tatar merchant Salih Yerzin. Currently, the Moscow Cathedral Mosque is the main Russia's religious object for those who profess Islam.

During the great Muslim holidays the mosque's area wasn’t enough to admit all the people desired to visit the religious landmark. Thus, it was decided to reconstruct the mosque on a massive scale in order to extend its area and renovate the building using the modern construction technologies.

25,000 metres of PE-Xa pipes in dimensions ranging from 16x2.0 to 40x30.7 mm

In 2005 a project was started to build a new spacious building of the mosque including modern and energy-efficient heating, tap water and indoor climate systems, which would simultaneously be in harmony with the building appearance.

Within the framework of the project, it was supposed to construct a six-story main Byzantine style building including several different size minarets, towers, and domes. The total area of the building amounts to 18,900 square meters, and this is twenty times more compared to the former place (prior to the reconstruction the mosque's area amounted to 964 m2). Thus, the capacity of the mosque can reach up to 10,000 persons.

To reinforce the constructions 131 piles were driven in the foundation of the building since there is a metro line nearby, and the Neglinnaya River flowing under the building. For the necessity to replace utility lines and fear of possible collapse, the old walls of the mosque were pulled down and assembled anew using the modern materials, which allowed preserving the same appearance as in 1904.

Inside the building, the halls were equipped for the people to pray. The balconies, designed at the halls' perimeter, allowed increasing the capacity of the building. There are also places in the mosque provided for the disabled persons.

As far as the prayers sit on the floor, it was decided to use the Uponor underfloor heating system and the Uponor DEM temperature automatic control system just to ensure comfort in the mosque's halls.

The inauguration ceremony for the renovated mosque was held on the 23rd of September 2015. The ceremony was attended by the Presidents of Russia, Turkey, Palestine, and the delegations from Azerbaijan, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, etc.

Using the Uponor technologies in the given project allowed opening the prospects for collaboration of the company with new contractors with regard to the historic cultural heritage objects. The Uponor internal engineering systems meet the highest standards of reliability, durability and safety which has been recognized by the Russian and international quality certification bodies. In our days these technologies are applied to construct the modern energy-efficient immovable objects.
