“Because we had limited time, we needed an efficient cooling solution that could be integrated into our existing architecture quickly and easily without the need for labour-intensive renovation work,” says Jürgen Drolshagen from HPI himmen engineering office.
The partners were so impressed by the system’s excellent, user-friendly handling for installation in the existing building structure and outstanding performance specifications that they chose to install the high-performance HL Uponor Comfort Panels.
The building owner was able to benefit from one-on-one support from Uponor’s own expert engineer, Friedhelm Piller (Dipl. Ing.), throughout the planning and technical implementation processes. This efficient radiant heating and cooling system includes a thermally active ceiling panel system that can be quickly and easily installed in the metal rail structure of a conventional ceiling grid. The system also includes passive mineral fibre elements that match up perfectly with the ceiling’s surface. The active panels of the high-performance HL version are composed of a cover layer as well as a thermally active, high-quality graphite conductor layer. The bottom side is lined with a white fleece. The Comfort Panel HL utilises the high thermal capacity of the fleece, thereby enabling it to be used as a monovalent solution for heating and cooling. The robust, cross-linked polyethylene pipe (PE-Xc pipe) can be connected to the energy source quickly and easily using the self-attaching coupling available for purchase as an additional accessory.
By using water as a heating and/or cooling medium, the thermally active Comfort Panel generates the perfect temperature throughout the year, quietly and draft-free. With its high cooling capacity of up to 92.5 W/m² at a low temperature of 10 K, the Comfort Panel HL fulfils the requirements of Germany’s current workplace guidelines. The partners selected a refrigeration machine with a maximum power of 8 kW as the cooling source for the system.
The existing pipe network used to supply the thermally active Comfort Panel was replaced with the Uponor multi-layer composite pipe. In practice, the precise, system-specific pipe and fitting program of the system manufacturer is particularly important in ensuring that the ceiling cooling panels are always properly connected using the practical self-attaching couplings. During daily operation, the system is controlled using an Uponor control station, which ensures that the Comfort Panels – which are also used for heating – can be adjusted to the desired temperature conveniently and reliably. The radiant heating and cooling system with Comfort Panels was designed to store reserve power.
The Comfort Panel HL also provides for better sound absorption. For example, with 70 percent active and 30 percent passive values in conjunction with DIN EN ISO 354, the system has a sound absorption value of Aw=0.45 and corresponds to Sound Absorption Class D.
With an active value of less than or equal to 40 percent, the system falls under Class B for high sound absorption. The new offices of HPI Himmen utilise square-shaped Uponor Comfort Panels HL (625 x 625 mm) with a ratio of 80 percent active panels to 20 percent passive panels. The client is also satisfied with the product’s flexibility. Plumbers and drywallers worked hand in hand to install the new thermally active radiant heating and cooling system in the ceiling of the office.
During the construction phase, the individual rooms were also fit with metal rail structures to allow the Comfort Panels to be installed throughout the entire building.
