Drinking water hygiene: planning, installing, checking

Drinking water is the most important means of sustenance. Hygienic drinking water installation can be achieved only, when the pipe network from the delivery point to the tapping point is in a perfect hygienic condition. This is achieved only by choosing the correct raw materials, the correct type of installation and a permanent supervision of the drinking water hygiene. For this purpose, plumbers and specifiers are required who have the necessary expertise in planning and realisation in order to ensure precisely this hygienic condition in a perfect way in the end.

Especially for drinking water installations in residential buildings as well as in commercial and public buildings, such as hotels, nursing homes, hospitals and sports facilities, hygienically perfect realisation is necessary because the building operator also bears the responsibility for the intended operation.     • Advantages of loop installation

    • Commercially or publically operated buildings, such as hotels, nursing homes and hospitals, are under especially close control by the public health departments. They carry out repeated sampling in conformity with the drinking water ordinance in order to ensure hygienically safe use of drinking water. After all, the operator of the building is responsible for hygienically safe drinking water delivery, and if problems occur the operator bears the damage to reputation.


      In case of an interruption of use, which means stagnation in the water pipes, special observation is required by an expert. Here, seasonally varying utilisation and different bed occupancy, such as in hotel areas or in a hospital, may have a negative effect on the water quality.


      If longer interruptions of use occur nonetheless, Uponor recommends the use of the Uponor Smatrix Aqua Plus hygiene control system. This ensures steady and safe exchange of water.

    • The drinking water ordinance obligates commercial landlords as well, and requests repeated sampling for Legionella bacteria in warm water distribution pipes. Legionella bacteria multiply in warm water as well as in cold water pipes, however, due to stagnation and lack of temperature maintenance in the temperature range of 25 to 50 deg. C. For this reason, the consistent temperature maintenance has to be taken into consideration whilst planning.


      At the tapping point, flow-carrying U wall angles have to be installed in order to be able to safely prevent stagnation zones. In conformity with German DVGW Worksheet W551, storey and individual feeds for warm water with a water volume of more than 3 litres have to be fitted with circulation up to the tapping point. This requirement ensures the temperature maintenance within the hot water pipes. This, however, causes problems for cold-water installations. The hollow spaces of a front wall installation may heat up, for example. „Looping through“ the circulation may also cause warming of the fittings conducting the cold water. This heating of cold water in the installation is unwanted. The loop installation on floor helps to prevent this happening.


      The parallel circuits of resistances in the pipe network and the distribution of the flow volume to two flow paths leads to a pressure loss optimisation and the minimization of the pipe contents of the installation. The hot water content of the bathroom with connection to the kitchen shown as an example is distinctly below 3 litres in total. The inclusion of the circulation can thus be dispensed with.


      The loop installation leads to ideal temperature maintenance and stagnation prevention. Thus, in conformity with German VDI Guideline 6003, the output time for hot water is safely observed.
