GF Engineers Discuss Unique Prefab Solutions on Appetite for Construction Podcast

By Maddy Dolby

Jeffrey Sixsmith, Director of Engineering at GF, and James Chandler, Head of Engineering Services at GF, had the opportunity to sit down with John Mesenbrink and Tim Ward on Mechanical Hub’s Appetite for Construction podcast.

The podcast episode, co-hosted by Mesenbrink and Ward, was recorded at the GF Flow Symposium in Nashville, Tenn. The event, held at the Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, brought together builders, developers, contractors, engineers, and executives to explore the future of system solutions across residential, commercial, infrastructure, and industrial markets.

In “A Tale of Two Case Studies: Installing Smarter, Increasing Efficiencies, Minimizing Risk, and Eliminating Rework,” Sixsmith and Chandler explored strategies, discussed lessons learned, and revealed outcomes from two specific projects.

“We thought it was appropriate to talk about these case studies at the same time because one leads into the other,” Sixsmith said. “Designing better leads to building better.”

During the “Design Better” portion of the breakout session, Sixsmith presented a case study on the design of microelectronics degas skids, which are compact, prefabricated water-treatment systems designed to remove dissolved gases like oxygen and carbon dioxide from ultrapure water used in semiconductor and microchip manufacturing. For the “Build Better” portion, Chandler presented a case study highlighting the fabrication of pipework for a data center.

The two also discussed the design and construction challenges they encountered on each project, as well as how prefabricated products can reduce jobsite rework, streamline installation, and help save time.

Note that the full podcast begins with Randy Ayers of Control Air Enterprises discussing Uponor Prefabricated PEX Water Risers along with GF Value Added Services Manager Daniel Worm and GF Global Product Manager Danny Miller chiming in about Uponor Prefabrication Services and Uponor Kitting Services.
