Think All PEX is the Same? Think Again

According to this recent PPI Advisory, some PEX products may not comply with applicable industry standards and are not third-party certified, despite implied claims regarding suitability for use in plumbing, fire safety, and radiant heating and cooling applications.
The use of noncompliant, noncertified PEX pipe in plumbing and mechanical applications can lead to premature failure, property damage, and potential legal liability throughout the supply chain.
It is important to know that major model codes require PEX pipe to be tested and listed to specific industry standards, such as ASTM F876 and CSA B137.5. According to PPI, noncompliant and noncertified PEX is being marketed and sold for use in applications such as potable water and hydronic heating and cooling systems. These applications require the highest levels of compliance and performance, as expected by specifiers, engineers, insurers, and building owners.
The sale, installation, or specification of non-listed materials can expose installers, retailers, distributors, and specifiers to potential legal liability if a product failure occurs. From a business perspective, the use of noncompliant materials can lead to costly consequences, such as failed inspections, removal, rework, warranty claims, and potential damage to a brand’s reputation.
PPI recommends specifying, purchasing, and installing only third-party certified PEX that is clearly marked with certification agency markings and logos. Third-party certification records can also be found on certification agency websites or requested from the supplier or manufacturer of the PEX pipe.
Any PEX lacking third-party certification markings should be treated as noncompliant and unsuitable for use in code-regulated applications. Ensuring proper certification is essential to maintaining compliance, minimizing risk, and protecting business interests as well as public health and safety.
