FAQ-Compression Fittings

Compression fittings are widely used across domestic plumbing where the system pressures are not as demanding as in commercial settings. Their popularity is largely due to their versatility, ease of installation without the need for heat or specialist tools, and the ability to disconnect and remake joints when required. 

However, they should always be installed in line with manufacturers’ guidelines. In this blog, we answer some commonly asked questions about compression fittings and highlight the areas where issues can arise if they are installed incorrectly or used in inappropriate applications. 

What is a compression fitting?

A compression fitting is a mechanical connector used to join lengths of copper or plastic pipework to each other, or to threaded components such as valves, without the need for soldering, welding or adhesives. 

Compression fittings create the seal by compressing components together as the fitting is tightened. They are particularly popular for quick repairs, installations in confined spaces and applications where systems cannot be fully drained before work is carried out. 

Commonly used with smaller-diameter pipes and tubing, compression fittings are widely utilised across domestic applications.

What are the key components of a compression fitting?

The key components of a compression fitting are as follows. 

  • Fitting body - The main connector that houses the pipe and provides the primary sealing surface. The compression side of the fitting is always male, but the other end may be male/female thread, compression, soldered, a tap connector end, or a blanking cap. 

  • Compression olive also called a ‘ferrule’  - A small deformable ring, usually manufactured from brass, copper or plastic, which slides over the pipe. As the fitting is tightened, the olive compresses around the outer diameter of the pipe, gripping it securely and forming a watertight seal. 

  • Compression nut – A threaded nut that is placed onto the pipe before the olive is added.  When tightened onto the fitting body, the nut forces the olive into the body of the fitting, compressing it around the pipe to create the seal. 

Compression fittings are available in a variety of sizes and configurations, from compact domestic fittings through to larger diameter industrial options. They are also manufactured in a number of different designs to suit specific installation requirements.

The installation of the Uponor S-Press PLUS Swivel-nut Compression Adapter is a simple and straightforward process. 

  • Cut the pipe. 
  • Add the compression adapter to the pipe, checking that the pipe is clearly visible in the observation windows. 
  • Press the fitting to complete the connection to the pipe and remove the press indicator foil. 
  • Remove the nut and olive from the compression fitting and simply insert the compression adapter into the body of the compression fitting in place of the nut and olive. 
  • The fitting can then be secured using the swivel nut. 

This unique fitting also allows the assembly to be disassembled should you wish to replace the valve at a later date.
