Ikast Water Supply works continuously to ensure a healthy and stable drinking water supply to the municipality's citizens. This includes continuous expansion or renovation of the pipeline network, corresponding to approx. 3 km per year. In this connection, the existing white PVC pipes will be phased out and replaced with PE pipes that are designed to last for 100 years. Currently, the pipe network in Ikast consists of 80% PVC pipes and 20% PE pipes, but the proportion of PE pipes is constantly increasing.
In 2024, Ikast Water Supply has taken a new step towards sustainability by installing ProFuse RC Blue drinking water pipes from Uponor Infra. These CO2-reduced pressure pipes are among the first in the industry with a CO2 reduction of up to 70%. This result has been achieved by using over 50% certified renewable raw material.
Operations Manager Lars Nørgaard, Ikast Water Supply, emphasizes that the industry association has set a goal of reducing CO2 emissions in the utility sector by 30%. Ikast Water Supply contributes to this by both replacing old drinking water pipes and installing new clean water tanks in PE instead of concrete or metal tanks, which have a longer lifespan and less climate impact. The overall climate accounts include products, components and new technology

A visionary approach to sustainability
At Ikast Water Supply, sustainability is a core value. Lars Nørgaard says:
"The extra cost for the sustainably produced pipes makes up so vanishingly little of the total project costs. It is everything else such as excavation, installation and subsequent re-establishment that make up the major expenses. Therefore, it makes no sense not to prioritize sustainability when the pipes also have the same high quality as traditional PE pipes."
This approach reflects Ikast Water Supply's commitment to offering the best and most sustainable solutions for the benefit of both citizens and the environment.

Driving force behind the green transition
According to Lars Nørgaard, the transition to green solutions is based on passion and dedication. The utility industry is generally driven by a desire to promote the green transition. At Ikast Water Supply, CO2 reduction is a natural part of all considerations. Combined with innovative solutions and professional pride, lasting results are created.

Reliability is the key factor
While sustainability is important, reliability is paramount. Ikast Water Supply supplies 15,000-16,000 people with clean drinking water daily, corresponding to 1 million m3 annually. This places high demands on the quality of pipes and systems. Lars Nørgaard explains:
"We choose products of the highest quality with the right certificates, and we prioritize that the pipes have a long life. But instead of prioritizing affordably, we rather build our solutions on quality, technical advice and the availability of professional expertise. It's about ensuring stability for citizens."

Sustainability and decency as pillars
Ikast Water Supply is an example of how decency, expertise and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand when operating and developing the water supply in the municipality. With a clear vision and dedication, the utility works to ensure clean drinking water while reducing the climate impact for the benefit of current and future generations.
